about

"You could say that this album has taken 20 yrs to be completed, it all started at Berklee College of Music in 1994 "
THE GED trio. (Gonzalez-Estacio-Duque)

There are some of those musical projects in which takes forever to become a reality. And perhaps by one of those turns of destiny, The GED trio, might as well be one of them.
Twenty years in the making, you could say that, specifically at the Berklee College of Music.
If you can move the cursos back in this story, seems hard to imagine why this project never happened before. However, we should be thankful that it’s NOW that this album came to fruition.

All three members, Luis Gonzalez, (guitar), Pablo Estacio (Bass) and Jose R. Duque(drums), knew of each other’s existence in their home town of Caracas, Venezuela. But it wasn’t until the three of them relocate to Boston to study at Berklee, that the everyday’s routine and demands of school work put them in touch to work and collaborate on each other’s projects. Pablo was an active performer back home with Quinto Combo, Luis had been busy with Alter Ego and Turno Nocturno, and Jose was involved in playing with several cover bands and the band Ars Vitae which played Jazz.

In Boston, these three musicians were always in contact. Pablo’s engineering projects for Luis’ Film Scoring Assignments, or Pablo and Luis participating on Jose’s compositions one as an engineer the latter as a session musician.
Graduating from Berklee was a big stepping stone, but also a jump into, literally, a limbo. No one really knew what was going to happen next. Each of them took different routes, Luis went onto get a Master in composition, and to write scores for indie films, Pablo went to sing with a Salsa band and later relocated to Venezuela to work as an engineer and composer for HBO, and finally Jose, moving out of Boston to a different city and state where he took part on many bands, Zumbatres, the Randy Armstrong world Ensemble, and James Cohen(Canada).

The Wheels of destiny kept turning. While in Venezuela, Pablo decides to take a Sabatical in Miami, after being burnt out with work. Luis had been into 10 yrs of having funded a music school and recording studio in Miami, along his brother. And Jose, after 17 yrs of freezing temperatures and toured with Randy Armstrong and be an special guest drummer on the latest album of Colin Edwin(Porcupine Tree’s Bassist) and Jon Durant, decides to move to Miamito pursue warmer paths.
Miami is the perfect meeting point for these three friends to convene again, Luis and Pablo working together writing music for tv commercials and Jose arriving with a bag full of compositions that needed to be performed by new hands.

THE GED TRIO, is Fusion. a playful game in which three friends give free will to all of their ideas without fear of being judged or put down. in GED TRIO we found fresh compositions with a light touch of maybe Rock, or maybe Progressive, and at the same time bordering the Afro Cuban and Venezuelan styles. However, defining their music would be a hard task.
The most interesting thing about this project, is that this recording wasn’t going to be an album. On the contrary, the intention was to have a demo to be able to sell the band for gigs at hotels and resorts. The thing was, after hearing how good the compositions sounded, and how they were not really recording any jazz Standards. They all look at each other and say, “ you know what?, this is an album, not a demo!!!”. Other interesting fact, is that this album is the first album in which Pablo inverse himself in the the Jazz realm, or something very similar. And that this debut includes the participation of very special guests. Otmaro Ruiz (piano& keys), the most notable Venezuelan Jazz pianist, who has worked with John McLaughlin, Lee Ritenaur, Gino Vanelli and others. Also, Grammy Award wining pianist, Victor Mestas (Ilan Chester, Guaco, Soledad Bravo) and Julio Andrade, saxophone virtuoso, who has played with Franco de Vita, Desorden Publico, Bacalao Men and the OSJ.

Having their music classified is something that this three musicians have no interest in. If it’s true that their music possess an aesthetic and texture akin to that of Jazz music, it’s also true that you can perceive a myriad of styles as some of their influences. It’s almost as if you can hear all of their influences at once and none of them.
Perhaps, it will be up to the listener to discern and classify their style if he/she wants to.
